What is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is not a single alloy, but the name applies to a group of iron based alloys containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium. By adding elements such as nickel and molybdenum as well as increasing the chromium content improves corrosion resistance, improves heat resisting properties, and/or improves fabricating characteristics.
Stainless steel differs from carbon steel by the amount of chromium present in it. Carbon steel rusts when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film is active and accelerates corrosion by forming more iron oxide. What prevents stainless steel from rusting is the presence of chromium which creates an invisible surface layer that prevents the rusting of the iron base by forming a complex chrome oxide that will not let oxygen attack the surface.
